An Awakening of the Senses

While cleaning my yard this afternoon, I realized that my neighborhood has returned to life. It is a flurry of activity. Old man winter has been replaced with the sound of mowing lawns, birds singing, kids playing, and my neighbors stopping by to say hello. 

Spring is in the air, making it a pleasure to be outside.

The change of seasons presents a perfect opportunity to awaken our senses. There is no better source than Mother Nature to assist with triggering our senses. 

The smell of food cooking, a familiar song, a rainy day, the texture of clothing, the sound of a child’s laughter – our senses are a source of pleasure in many ways. 

Some people associate the sense of smell with memories and experiences, similar to how others associate photos with memories. 

Our senses are as individual as we are.

To help awaken your senses, use this mini-meditation as a guide:

Close your eyes and create a field under a blue sky with a few white clouds.
Find a comfortable place in the field to sit and relax your shoulders. Breathe deeply while listening to the animals scampering through blossom-filled trees.
Very slowly release the breath while taking in another, filled with the smell of nectar from the blossoms and the taste of honey on your tongue.
Sit quietly and notice the birdsong as it dances with the wind. It is music to the ears.
While releasing the breath, a spring breeze caresses your face, and the sun warms the skin.
Place your hands on the ground, and accept the earth’s nourishment. Flex your fingers and rise slowly as all the senses are fully awakened now with life.

The body’s senses can become a source of pleasure that will enrich our lives immensely. They are blessings that can bring joy to our experiences by slowing down the present moments so that we can enjoy them to the fullest extent.
