Betsy Lyman is the owner of Arabella & Lemon Meringue located in Piqua, Ohio.

RBA: What does holistic living or self-care mean to you? Do you consider self-care a priority in your everyday life?

Betsy: Holistic living and self-care, for me, means taking care of myself first before starting my day to be the best person I can be to take on the day. If I don’t put myself (self-care) first, then I cannot take care of others. 

RBA:  When the decision was made to create Arabella, was there a purpose in mind – apart from financial gain? What was the driving force behind building your own business?

Betsy: The driving force behind Arabella was the environment. I NEVER wanted to own my own business. I didn’t love the environment I worked in but I loved my clients and my work. So, I needed to create a new space for ME and MY CLIENTS to be happy in.

RBA: Do you believe that part of your life’s purpose is to contribute to others’ (namely your clients’) well-being by providing them with a place to connect and enhance their sense of well-being?

Betsy: I do believe part of my life purpose is to connect and enhance others. It could be in small talk, and it also could be very emotional one-on-one about what a client will share or what I will share back. We are all going through a journey and it’s nice to have a SAFE place to talk with no judgment.

RBA: As a client, when I walk into Arabella, there is a sense of calm that washes over me. The shop design, decorations – even the furniture, my chair – appear to be deliberate. Everything adds to my “experience”. Does this just happen or are YOU making this happen?

Betsy: I take pride in making everyone feel special when they walk in. I try my best, even if I don’t know your name, to greet you and make you feel comfortable in the same environment, that I created to make MYSELF feel comfortable.

RBA: Would you consider Arabella a reflection of YOU?

Betsy: Arabella is a reflection of me and my coworkers. TEAM, ACCOUNTABILITY, FRIENDSHIP and much more. I’m so proud of my coworkers.
