Unplugging - Breaking Free from Distractions

There is an idea often referred to as “unplugging” that encourages limiting the amount of time spent on a cell phone. By doing so, according to this idea, you become more aware of the present moments, and distractions become less. So, after giving some thought to “unplugging,” I decided it would be the perfect time to unplug during my upcoming staycation.

The focus would be limiting the time spent on social media and the inevitable rabbit holes I would likely fall into while scrolling the internet. Overall, I found this idea of “unplugging” to be a very appealing experiment.

I must admit that the first couple of days in, I forgot about unplugging and had to get myself back on track with intention and soon realized that having the phone in my hand – at all times was a habit.

Breaking the habit wasn’t going to be simple, but I charged ahead, intending to create more present moments for myself.

As the week continued, I questioned if it was necessary to check in on social media or catch up on the news every other hour. It always turned out to be a total distraction and a complete waste of time. And down the rabbit hole, I would go!

Eventually, I overcame this desire and found more time to spend in my garden. My senses soon became in tune with my surroundings, and I enjoyed not being rushed or limited with my time due to the distractions of the phone.

By Friday, five days into unplugging, there had been a significant shift in my cell phone usage. Granted, anyone on vacation expects downtime. However, I didn’t feel like using my phone to avoid getting distracted by checking in on social media or scrolling the internet.

Most often, while taking my dog for a walk, I would listen to a podcast or a news outlet, but that changed. It is a complete joy to take Bogey for a walk. Immersed in the smell of spring and the warmth of sunshine, I savor every minute of it without distractions. In other words, my present moments have become much more important to me than my cell phone.

Unplugging may only be for some. It is an intentional choice for me, and all the necessary efforts are worth it.
